“There is value in vulnerability and insanity in isolation.” ~ Ed Young

No one excels in their ability to lead others without surrounding themselves with the right person (s) to whom they can answer. It’s called accountability.

Accountability.

When I began my leadership journey, I viewed having to be held accountable for doing what I was supposed to do through the lenses of negativity. Being transparent was not encouraged for fear of others questioning my credibility or my ability to lead. I began to examine areas of my life where I needed to create checks and balances to help me overcome my areas of struggle in order to become an effective leader. I soon realized accountability was not a dirty word.

We all struggle.

The truth is you need someone, other than GOD, to be accountable to; someone not afraid to speak the honest truth with aggressive love coupled with generous grace. What are some reasons you have for not having an accountability partner? Could your reasons be rooted from a personal insecurity? A lack of trust to be vulnerable with another person?

Leadership is progress not perfection.

As you look at you think about your list of reasons for not having an accountability partner, what are the underlying fears and insecurities you need to overcome?

What are the areas of your life where you could use accountability? Be honest with yourself.

Vulnerability creates connection.

Vulnerability can be a scary thing because we fear transparency. No one likes feeling exposed. However, vulnerability exposed in an environment of safety and genuine concern allows for a connection with an accountability partner that runs deep. Choosing the right accountability partner requires that your choice be one that has been covered in prayer. After all, you are partnering with someone in sharing personal information about your fears, struggles and insecurities. Choose wisely.

Here are my suggestions for choosing an accountability partner:

A person of strong faith; someone who believes GOD above all others

  • A person of integrity; someone who can be trusted to keep your personal details
    confidential
  • A person who is reliable and can be trusted to keep their commitments to you and the
    relationship
  • A person with biblical wisdom and discernment that knows how to ask the hard
    questions when appropriate.
  • A person who generously gives grace and withholds judgment.
